Secular humanism is when students takes what they interpret from humanities, and apply it to their everyday life. According to the definition, students should have morals and a code of values that they evolve from the humanities. Students when they inter the world they are suppose to hold society accountable for the decisions they make. Students should have the standards they draw from the humanities. Fish argues against secular humanities because he feels that students don’t draw any sense of humanities from what they learn in class. He believes that students are driven to monetary aspiration and not humanistic valves. Fish believes if colleges and universities could teach students how to use humanities to show valve of worth. Then students and employers would be more incline to promote humanities like science and technology. Rachel’s blog posted January 7th , 2008 at 5:59am blog #30 states “Perhaps the clue is in the name. The humanities involve the study of humanity–its past, its thought processes, its culture and its meaning for we humans. The notion that the humanities have no resonance other than for pleasure in everyday life suggests a very bleak picture of the human experience indeed. “ In my view I feel humanities “can save us” by holding society responsible for how employers do business. Employers and companies should be accountable for their actions towards their employees. Instead of them looking for a profit all the times, do the right thing by keeping people employed. So they would be able to send their children to college if they choose to go. When their employees are ready to retire, they shouldn’t have to worry about if they are going to have a retirement plan when they reach the appropriate age. It could “change” us give us a sense of values we could use towards the betterment of our society, communities, families, and friends.
