Melissa Oden’s paintings at CWE walls are very bright and modern. Ms. Oden is an advisor at City College’s main campus. I enjoyed viewing the painting of “The Beauty Shop”. The drawing displays three women. One of them is a hair dresser and she has a customer on the chair. The customer on the chair is reading some sort of magazine or book as she is about to have her hair cut. There is another customer under the dryer with rollers. It appears as if the hair dresser is having a conversation with the woman under the dryer. The painting is filled with checkerboard floors, bright lamps and tables. I choose this painting because doing my hair is actually something I look forward to doing on a weekly basis.

In an Artist Mind
When I think of art and look at art work I look at the colors, shapes, sizes of the shapes and the subject that’s on the canvas or displayed. Art creates a world that is within the artist mind, which can help to permeate the artist personal lives and is their primary transmitter of what type of heritage the artist stems from. Art can also be used to develop and understand the past and present environment in other cultures.
In my observation of the “Colorful Interactions” work by Myrah Brown Green and Melissa Oden I chose a painting in titled “Beauty Shop.” The artist who created the painting was Ms. Oden. The setting took place in what seem to be a hair salon but when looking further it looked more like a home salon. The chairs that were painted look more homely. The painting displayed many colors which lead me to believe that the artist was happy about what was being expressed on canvas but when looking further one of the characters was expressing some type of pain. She may have represented a customer or a family member; she was dressed in a green dress wearing glasses and was under a dryer near a sink it seems like the dryer was too hot so she began to fan herself and make facial expressions. I believe that the bright colors were used to cover the pain that she was feeling. The stylist holding the scissors looked very focus and ready to perform her act of “styling.” She was dress in pink and white attire. The other character that could of represent a customer or family member was sitting in a chair with her back faced to the stylist reading a book or magazine ready to get her hair cut. The painting of the three ladies conveyed realism which was demonstrated the setting. I could relate to the setting cause I have been to hair salon. The artist used allegory objects to determine the setting to describe who was who in the painting. The painting portrayed objects that related to actions and style (human style) which is what your hair represents.
