Nietzsche and O’Connor discourse

May 7th, 2009 by dwuebben in Uncategorized · 15 Comments

Students should respond to the secondary readings, using the sentence structure to format their responses. You should find a quote or argument from the secondary source, and then show a section in the primary text (Nietzsche or O’Connor) that proves or disproves what the author is arguing.

Last night in class we were discussing the seemingly opposite outlooks posed by Victor and Thomas. In this post I would like you write about what they intend to do with Victor’s father’s ashes. What do they think will happen when the pour out the ashes? How is this expectation significant to understanding their overall attitudes and relationship to one another?

Veblen’s “Economics of Women’s Dress”

March 23rd, 2009 by dwuebben in Uncategorized · 19 Comments

Apply one of the three principles of women’s dress to a single article or item explaining how it displays “conspicuous expensiveness,” “novelty,” or “ineptitude.” It would be great if you could find an image on the internet that you could share with us (by creating a link). For example, I found a bottle of water called “Bling” that costs $40. This would fall under the category of novelty because once the water is gone, you have to buy another one. It only lasts for short period of time. It also shows “expensiveness.” While some “miracle” drink for health might be worth more than the customary $1 or $2 bottle of water, as the name suggests, Bling is meant to cause people to look and pay attention to what you are drinking- period. They are no health benefits (like “Smart Water) or illusions of transporting to a warm island (Fiji) implied by the name Bling. You aren’t paying for anything that is much better, just something that is expensive to be expensive. So, go out and find another “Bling” article of clothing or product and then write about how it relates to one of Veblen’s principles.

Created by Hollywood writer and producer Kevin G. Boyd, Bling H2O says its mission is to \

For those who missed class and did not write an Arendt Paragraph, please review the “Moral Altruism” article and then write a short review of the article- Is morality a favorable trait? How and why might this be one of the  structures that benefit an entire community? Go back to the quote we discussed in class tonight and show how morality might be an “evolutionary” trait.

Class as usual- March 2

March 2nd, 2009 by dwuebben in Uncategorized · No Comments

It’s cold and there is still some snow on the ground but we’ll be going ahead with business as usual in tonight’s class. However, let me review the schedule and policies.

1) Before class tonight everyone should submit a paragraph that summarizes a section of Arendt’s essay.

2) Tonight we will discuss Darwin’s “Natural Selection”

3) The Final draft of essay # 1 is due March 9th. If you didn’t turn in a first draft, you may submit a final, but it would be a good idea to go to the writing center or get an outside reader. If you turned in an essay, but don’t pick it up tonight, you’ll need to come Wednesday between 4:30 and 5:30 if you want feedback for your final draft. All essays must be turned in March 9th. As the syllabus clearly states: Late papers will not be accepted.
